Flight Attendant jobs in Canada

Hi there,

I am a flight attendant based in New Zealand with over six years experience with two major airlines, as a junior, trainer, business class flight attendant and now in a management role.

I have just had my one year extendable work visa approved and am looking for flight attendant work in Canada. I hear there are crys for positive, enthusiastic and experienced crew, yet I have not heard back from Westjet (my airline of choice). Does the fact I am currently residing in New Zealand hold me back? Is it something else I am not aware of? (The CV is very up to scratch).

Any other tips on getting a foot in the door would be appreciated.

I prefer to be based in Alberta either Edmonton or Calgary but will go where the great positions are.

Hey,

I'm not that familiar with flight attendant hiring policies, so take this with a grain of salt.

You probably know this, but big thing for F/As at airlines in Canada is to be bilingual. Air Canada requires that you know English and French or English and one other language that will be spoken on their routes.

While WestJet and some of the other airlines don't require being bilingual, it is extremely important. It is also beneficial to have a few internal references at WestJet to help your cause.

I'm not sure how airlines in Canada will look at the extendable Visa. It is possible that they may think that you are only looking for temporary work, but I'm not sure. Perhaps that's something to address in a Cover Letter - that you're interested in staying with that airline for a significant amount of time.

Checking on the WestJet website it says they require a Canadian Permanent resident card and the ability to obtain Visas where ever WestJet operates - not sure how this relates to the visa

So none of this is definite, just thoughts.

Can you sing? I have flown with WestJet many times...and their FAs are required to belt out a few.

I think you should know that the downswing of working out of Edmonton or Calgary are their soaring real estate/rental prices. I doubt if WestJet pays their FAs enough to afford a half-million dollar home, or $1,500+/month for a one-bedroom apartment (if you can get it).

I hope this didn't disillusion you, but would hate for you to get here, and
end up living in a box under a highway overpass.

Real Estate doesn't cost as much as you think it does.

In Vancouver, you can rent a one bedroom apartment in Kitsilano for $1,000 per month. Kitsilano is a premium area, near the beach.

For $1500 per month, you can easily get a 1 bedroom apartment in DOWNTOWN Vancouver.

Now owning property is a different story.
The value of my house in Vancouver went from $500,000 to $1.4mil in 7 years.
Not bad eh?
Renting is usually cheap, and then theres all those people near Richmond where you can rent a basement to live in as a F/A if you were working at Vancouver. Somewhere around $400-700 a month including utilities.

exactly. owning may be difficult but so what. as you said, in Vancouver there are plenty of rentals available well within a flight attendants budget.
