Sorry for the cryptic subject, had to get a few of you in here!

Myself and another UK pilot mate are hoping to travel to Canada in late June to visit a couple of RAF mates training at Moose Jaw, and we would like to spend a day or two in Toronto to get over jet lag/buy a hockey shirt etc before flying up to Regina to meet them.

I would be very grateful if anyone has any advice on cheap B&B accomodation in either downtown Toronto or around the airport (and any info on airline crew discounts?)

Also, we intend to fly on the cheap using standby tickets from LHR-YYZ, and then YYZ-YQR. Would there be more chance of a seat on any particular flights than others, or are they all pretty full/empty?

All info very gratefully received!

Thanx guys,
AB

PS Are there still any decent hockey games on over there, or has the season finished?

Just make sure that you buy an Edmonton Oilers jersey instead of that overpriced toronto one.

The hockey season is almost over! The finals have begun and there's only 2 teams left to decide the championship. Unfortuatly those teams are New Jersey and Colorado (in the USA). However in YYZ you can go downtown and visit the Hockey hall of fame and get a lesson on how the sport began and how it got to where it is today. It's worth it. Accomodations around the Airport are abondant. You will have about 10 different hotels to chose from. The Days Inn should be the cheapest of them. Expect to pay a minimum of 80$ canadian (£37). Most hotels have shuttles to/from the airport.

For the tickets, Try Air Transat, they fly to YYZ from MAN, LGW, STN, CWL, NCL and a few more. Canada 3000 also flys most of those destinations. As for the load factor I have no idea, but since the are charters they should be almost full. Air Canada could be an option from LHR or of course British Airways. For the second portion of your journey, Canada 3000 and Roots Air should be your cheapest bet.

Have fun........

Affirm, Westjet can get you YYZ-YQR with a one stop. Less expensive than the opposition.

WestJet proposed operating out of YYZ, but postponed it indefinitely(?). Closest service is from Hamilton, not really convenient for a transatlantic cnx.

Hey Guys,
Cheapest room near YYZ is a Travellodge NORTH of the airport. 59 bucks with aircrew I.D. Also, if trying to get out west, there is a Hamilton Shuttle from YYZ to get you to YHM and dest. Roots is gone. Flamed out after a few short weeks and was geared for the upscale market anyway. Try your best to get a jumpseat as Capt. may waive ticket requirement altogether. Good Luck.
P.S. Montreal Canadiens is THE team in the N.H.L.
