Sad news from up North :(

A N-reg. Cessna 310 twin arriving from Greenland ditched @ 16:30 GMT today (or at least radar contact lost) 50 nm west of Keflavik airport. The pilot reported that one engine was out andt that he was having trouble crossfeeding the tanks. Moments later the second engine died. This was when he was 60 nm from shore. Resque helicopters and a F-27 both from the Icelandic Coast Guard along with a SAR from the danish navy have been at the scene for couple of hours now but no luck.

There has been $hitty weather here lately, heavy showers of hail and accompanying CB 1900-3000ft, plus 25-35kts of wind on the scene. It is also very very dark outside so outlook not too good.

Sorry have no news link in english (only icelandic) but i'll try to keep you guys informed

The suspended the search by air around 9 pm last night due to poor vis. but vessels on the scene continued through the night. At daylight two helicopters and a F-27 from the icelandic coast guard continued the search but no sign of the plane nor pilot. WX was really bad yesterday evening and continued through the night, heavy snow and hail storm.

Pilot is belived to be british, ferrying the plane across the pond

edit: here is a link to a local news coverage: http://dagskra.ruv.is/streaming/sjonvarpid/?file=4398179/0

sorry only in icelandic, but it will show you guys how the contitions are :(

How very sad for all concerned. There must be nothing worse for the SAR crews than having to abandon a search knowing there is still someone out there.

Doesn't look too good. Do you know the registration and/or pilots name?

would be interest to follow this story as I fly a C310D. The only problem will be if the plane and pilot cannot be found which sadly looks very likley.

This afternoon SAR decided to call of the search for the C310 that ditched yesterday. The pilot is believed to be dead :(.

Only 20 minutes after the plane disapeared from radar a Challenger from the Danish Navy was at the scene but no sign of the plane. SAR haven't found anything, the plane just vanished. It has been confirmed that the pilot was british

Having seen some photos of a ferry flight into Greenland, I am filled with awe at those brave souls who are prepared to make that journey.

The vast majority of overwater flights complete without incident, but there will always be a few that don't make it to shore.

Sea state, winds, temperature and available daylight are all major factors in the survivability of a ditching -- to say nothing of a good survival suit and raft.

Maybe it's better to go by Brazil this time of year.
