Hi all,

Was anyone on Farnbrough Radar 123.225 today around 11-12 today??

My pal and I were tracking the south coast heading to bembridge when a pan call was made. The guy had a over heated engine and was cleared into Gatwick..........

Just wondered if anyone knew how they got on??

Also another question while in on, when talking to Bembridge (by the way a really friendly air field/ controller) quite a few people were coming on asking to land there as Sandown was shut. My question is why did Bembridge seem second choice to a lot of people? I'd take a hard runway over grass in the winter any day:O. Is it easier to walk into town from sandown or is it even nicer than Bembridge?

Thanks people and happy landings:ok:

Don't know anything about the Pan .............guess it all turned out OK otherwise I think there would be further shock horror headlines.

Re : Bembridge or Sandown... A lot of people head for the latter because of the restaurant there......
although Bembridge is closer to the Crab and Lobster.

Personally I prefer Bembridge (although my aircraft prefers the grass)......... swayed by the more reasonable landing fee for <750 Kgs

Seems strange not to phone ahead to enquire about the status of the grass at this time of year. ????

I think this is what you heard ..

On the other point, yes Bembridge is more reliable in winter with its hard runway but both are a long walking distance from town (depending which town you mean of course). Taxis are readily available from both though.

Glad to hear it was a safe landing for you at Gatwick....
Out of curiosity, did Gatwick charge landing/ handling fee for landing there today? Not sure what would happen in a case like that.....

I'll try Sandown in the summer then.....
Must say though, its was worth the walk to the prop pub just to see the odd A/C coming in low over the road which runs across the threshold of 30.... I'd hate to be on a bus going down that road:ok: (someone was probably saying this about my landing too)!!

Fuji Abound, glad everything turned out ok. I'm sure Gatwick were better equipped for you than we would be at Tibenham. :ok:

Yesterday, Bembridge was like a ghost town. I thought it was mainly due to the flying conditions or everyone taking a break over the festive season. I always fly to Bembridge due to the hard runway, however, I think my next IOW visit will be to Sandown.

We took a cab into Bembridge town and walked to the fishing port but there was nothing there to interest my passengers. I instantly wished that I had taken the cab to Sandown instead.

Fuji,
Pleased all went well.

I don't think you would find Sandown any more interesting. In summer it's a rundown holiday resort, in winter it's an EMPTY rundown holiday resort.
Plenty of other places to go to on the Island though.

Many moons ago, i was one of the A/G's at Bembridge, if i wasnt helping organising the Schneider air race, or refuelling, or rolling the new grass runway I created for Des Norman - (god bless his soul) or making tea, or ferrying aircraft that were forever smashing our runway lights to pieces or dropping people down to the crab and lobster whilst still giving info on a handheld...... ahh those were the days....

I will never forget the days a guy used to fly his TB10 down from Blackbushe just to go for a swim in Whitecliff bay at least once a week in the summer.

Things to do in Bembridge:
Crab & Lobster, Bembridge Village inc coffee shop, Bembridge Lifeboat Station, Priory Bay Hotel, Fresh local dressed crab, Baywatch on the beach --- Ooohhhh I got in so much trouble in there - almost ended up marrying the owners daughter....! but thats another story...!!!

(We) I was i/c brakes right seat took a Citation Jet C525 in there and out - as well as Pilatus PC XII, but the aount of people that could'nt cope and went around or gaveup after 3 approaches in a 172 never ceased to amase me or anyone else that worked there....... - my goodness i have had some fun on that island.... :ok: :E

Unfortunately I believe that the Aviator restaurant at Sandown Airfield has been severely damaged by fire overnight. :(

that would explain the go around I saw at Gatwick yesterday, and the plane going around then taking up the hold.

well done Fuji for putting a PA44 down with only one engine !

happy new year to you.
