English Language Test (EASy Assesment)

Hello ...

this month we (pilots) will start undertaking this test over the phone...by calling an institute in canada to test us .

the call duration is about 15 mins.

the grades are from 1-6...with the min required to pass is level 4.

this is a new requirment by our kuwait DGCA.

and this test is called IATA English assesment test.

can some one please shed some light on this test...

We did this evaluation on PC's via internet, the test involves first listening to a statement read aloud, or a recorded radio transmission, you should pause for a couple of seconds so the computer doesn't cut off the first portion of your read back, read back as clear and concise as possible, on our test it would then indicate graphically with some bars how well the read back was rated, if you make a slight error the computer would say "say again" to give you a second go.
Native English speakers usually received marks above 80% and were finished, others with strong accents usually had to do an additional written grammar test that was quite straight forward.

I was involved in the initial testing of this type of ICAO assessment about 18 months ago and it works fairly well.
Remember though, that it is a computer and while there is a bit of flexibility in some of the parameters.....one area where it will not give you any slack, is phraseology.
Don't forget your DAY SEE MAL and NINER etc.
It's the little things that can make the difference between a 3 and a 4.
By the way......for all of you out there doing this test......be it by phone, or in a testing centre......or here with me in the sandpit.....an ICAO Level 4 is a pass....but it's the lowest passing level possible.
Aim to get a 5 !!

Are you supposed to speak Canadian English, American English, the Queen's English? Natives from various UK regions would probably fail!! :confused:
