View Full Version : Airfields near Wakefield

I will shortly be renewing my SEP rating and in an effort to get back into the air more frequently will be looking to buy a share in a permit aircraft rather than hiring. I've been trawling through AFORS, the hanger and the popular flying classifieds to see what is available and how much things cost, but am also planning on spending a day going round the local airfields to see if there is anything advertised on the club boards etc.
So given that I don't want to spend more than 45 minutes travelling to the airfield if I did buy anything, I will be visiting Sherburn, Full Sutton, Breighton (possibly too far away), and Crossland Moor (as I work in Halifax). Is there anywhere else people would recommend I visit ?

A rather useful tool for finding nearby airfields (you may have to register?)

I doubt you'll find many shares going around these parts. Of any of your suggested airfields, Crosland Moor may be worth a look. Also if you're in Halifax, have a look in at Oxenhope if only for a cuppa and a natter.
The airfield finder seems to suffer from too much imagination.
Crosland Moor and Huddersfield are listed, its one and the same airfield ! Moorlands ain't near Pudsey either, its much further east by 50 miles or so. (Well it was when I last landed there)
If all else fails, start a group, but make sure you have hangarage first. Most PFA aircraft need to be hangared, if only to stop them blowing away - it can get breezy around these parts.

Have you looked at Nethertorpe? Probably on the limit of how far you want to travel, about 40miles from Wakefield, but could be a good bet. Not been there for a few months now but there always seems to be shares going on the notice board there. I'd recommend Phoenix Flying Club there for renewing your SEP too. Great school and one of the cheapest hourly rates I've found.

Good luck

Wouldn't have thought that Breighton was much further away then Sherburn?
Both pretty much Selby direction

(and, no, I'm not posting any links to any of my pictures fron there - you'll have to link to my site via my profile!!!)

Thanks for the input.

I'll have a look at Netherthorpe as well as the rest and will definitely be looking at Breighton, if for no other reason that to have a look at the collection (and a friend of mine will apparently be racing his Firefly there next year).

Being a novice I'm not to keen on trying to start a group myself but it is something I will bear in mind if I am still looking for something in 9 months time. I have just joined the PFA so maybe something will come to light through that as well.

TTH - Any thoughts as to why there are so few shares/groups in the area or is it that they hardly ever come up for sale ?

Regarding shares coming up for sale - the club notice board / grapevine is where to do your detective work. By the time any share has come into print in the magazines, it's probabably been sold.
If you buy a share, make sure its not something 50 miles away at the back of a hangar. Of anywhere you may do best at Breighton. Several Jodels there, if thats what you fancy. Certainly they're best value for money. A Jodel D112 (65 horsepower) is cheapest and will put some fun into your flying. The Aeronca Champ is another 65 horse PFA type. Both these need hand-starting as they usually have no engine-driven electrics, so you'd need to be shown how to safely swing a propeller. But if you feel you need to travel at more than 90 knots, you'll be spending more brass unless you arrange to fly downwind all the time !

A 2 seat Jodel is top of my list as I would want some company from time to time.

As for speed I very rarely exceeded 90kts in the PA28 whilst training (much to my instructors amusement/annoyance) anyway so I'm not a speed demon, for me it's all about the journey :8

The only time I may want something faster is if I was to take the family to see my parents in Shoreham and I'd need to hire a 4 seater for that anyway.

Might be worth trying Sheffield City www.sheffieldcityairport.com
