Dnata has gotten connected to a Ground Movement Radar(GMR) at Dubai Intl. Airport. Can someone explain what all is needed (Gnd + Aircraft) for this system to work. Do pilots have to keep the transponders ON until reaching the parking stands?

Hi Sharpshooter.

The answer is yes, the guys can "see" you via your transponder now - gives them great S/A when its fogged out, and when you are out of sight visually from the tower.

If you turn the transponder off they will have words - happens to us at Paris CDG where they remind you to turn it on if you forget on the pushback

Its very good!

Widely used at major european airports, unfortunatly not widelly used in the USA, where there they have a problem with incursions, in my opinion.

Old US GMR systems not very efficient but FAA rolling out ASDE-X which has automated controller alerts and which Sensis and Honeywell can modify to create a cockpit alert on aircraft TCAS. The multilateration (MLAT) elements of ASDE-X have also been sold to European airports, India and Hong Kong. It's latest version known as A-SMGCS is being installed in BNE, SYD and MEL, Australia. Watch for the MLAT sensor being used instead of radar and long before ADS-B becomes widespread. Already in use in places like Innsbruck and being installed in the North Sea to track helicopter movements.
