The requirements for lapsed UK CAA-issued PPL holders wishing to apply for the NPPL have now been simplified.

Basically, do whatever refresher flying you need, obtain the medical and pass the GST. If you've lapsed for more than 5 years, your refresher flying needs to be agreed with an Instructor (which is somewhat obvious, I would have thought) and you will need to answer a few oral questions during your GST.

The rule is a remarkable victory for straightforward common-sense...

Praise is due to Pamela Campbell - as well as others, I would imagine - for the work with EASA needed to get such a common-sense rule into the book.

To save anyone the trouble of going through the document linked above;

To quote:

The Allowances Document (Cross Credits) on the NPPL website: www.nppl.uk.com updated version NPPL/XC/REV 06.6 dated 3 Oct 2007 page 7 gives you the following information regarding expired licences:

b. Where a SEP class rating included in such licences has expired by more than 5 years, the licence holder shall undergo a course of SSEA refresher flying training as specified by a FI(A) or CRI(SPA), hold a valid NPPL Medical Declaration or JAA Class 1 or 2 medical certificate and pass the NPPL GST in a SSEA*. The licence holder shall also pass an oral theoretical knowledge examination conducted by the authorised examiner as part of the GST.
