Calcutta, and probably Delhi and Bombay, have had CPDLC for 7 years that I know of. Yet it is still on test. In the meantime we are still using HF to contact Calcutta when over Burma, (or Myanmar as we now call it). Does anyone know when the Indians are going to unpack all the boxes.
China has had CPDLC for a much shorter period and in less time than it takes Delhi immigration to clear a 747 load of pax, the Chinese are operational with theirs. Myanmar have also received CPDLC and although it is not yet operational, I bet it will not still be under test in 7 years.
Does anyone have a progress report from Calcutta?

Officially, CPDLC is still undergoing trials on the North Atlantic.

From the NAT-PCO Website:

"Phases 1 & 2 CPDLC Operational trials were commenced by NavCanada (Gander) and UK NATS (Shanwick) in Autumn 2002 and Phase 3 commenced in December 2003. Iceland (Reykjavik) and commenced Phase 1& 2 operational trials in 2005. Portugal (Santa Maria) commenced Phase 3 operational trials in the last quarter of 2006. A fully operational CPDLC service is in operation in the New York FIR."

"Gander, Reykjavik, Santa Maria and Shanwick plan to provide a full CPDLC service in the fourth quarter of 2007"

Phase 4 in the North Atlantic is due to go live in a few weeks. Delays in implentation are not always due to technology, but often due to the time it takes getting all the service providers, operators and ICAO reps in a particular region to agree on an overall standard to be introduced re. message sets, NDA transfers, etc.

Perhaps the Chinese, having the luxury of a huge area under their sole responsibility, have been able to speed up their implementation. Countries with smaller FIRs and reduced transit times may have additional issues with successful log-ons to Current Data Authority and Next Data Authority transfers to/from receiving sectors whose systems may not be in place or so be well advanced, etc.

Just guessing mind'ya, but it is a complex area, not just in terms of technology.

Calcutta works most of the time, Chennai when the day guy is on [or so it seems] and Myanmar spasmodically [you can get them a few trips in a row then a couple off!!]

G'day ;)

Thought; Calcutta will always ACCEPT the logon attempt, but ATC won't always pick it up.

Chennai is more reliable than calcutta. the stuff really works well but the controllers for some unknown reason are asked not to rely on the info. So still stuck with HF. Chennai is getting a new radar in a few weeks and i hope they start using cpdlc regularly.
Calcutta has the latest equip but the bureaucracy has not got the official approval to use it.
Typical slow admin process we see in india, thanks to the blokes in the DGCA.

Cannot talk for India, but CPDLC over the NAT is still far from perfect, and only 25% of the aircraft crossing the Atlantic this Summer were equipped. So HF has still a future ....

NAT Phase 4 will clear some of the current problems , but as long as the whole thing is largely based on ACARS , with no acknowledgment messages, the full monty ( i.e no HF R/T anymore ) is still somewhere in the future, even in the NAT.

as to the Chinese doing everything faster than anybody else, I would not dare to comment on this,,, but RVSM in 2008 in meters comes to my mind:rolleyes:

Works every time I use it. And I fly for a UK major across the NATS a lot. Great system. Rather have that than some bloke on HF saying "This is Mumxxxsssssssssssssssssssssd ssssssssssssssslks , go ahexxxxxxxxxxxxssssssssssssssss"
