I wondered if my beloved dog was allowed to come on trips in a four seater.

Sure can ! And here (https://www.sky-fox.com/en.htm) (go 'headsets' > 'dog hearing protectors') you can find a headset for Wuff :ok:

And the best bit is you don't even need 90-day currency to carry them.

Opinion is divided, however, on whether it is legal to allow the dog to manipulate the controls or use the radio....

I don't think you can bring it outside the UK though. International travel with pets isn't so straight forward.

Mrs Stick INSISTS on bringing the dog whenever we go flying, but last time we took him in a cirrus and he chewed through the rear seat belt!
It cost nearly £400:ugh:

My old dog "Sooty" had several hundred hours in the right hand seat before he died, and loved flying. He liked to bark at the sheep in the fields on take off and again on final approach, but settled down to sleep in the cruise, only awaking when he heard the power reduction and gear and flaps going down for landing. I never had any bother taking him flying but when ATC heard him barking over the radio I used to get remarks like "does he enjoy dog fights? he sounds a bit "Ruff" on the radio...."

I took a quiet dog with no problems at all. Well, apart from the problem that you're not supposed to transport animals of any kind from or into Hawarden without special permission and beaurocracy! Apparently due to Chester zoo being nearby; anyway I managed to convince them that the hairy old mutt my passengers had turned up with was just that, a hairy mutt, and not a protected species. The dog slept all the way to Blackbushe and back a week later without a wimper.

I suppose it depends upon the dog. Although as I said above, my old dog Sooty ( a Poodle) was no bother in an aeroplane, I wouldn't dream of taking his replacement, a Dalmatian. As mad as a hatter. It would bring a whole new meaning to the phrase " Give me that stick...!" :E

Back in the early sixties Neville Browning flew from Stapleford Tawney with his spaniel harnessed in his Zlin. After visiting Elstree he would roll inverted after takeoff on 09 displaying the spaniels pendulous ears.

Can you still log a solo XC with a Dog in the next seat?

I tried it once, but the dog couldn't understand why I wouldn't throw the stick for him to fetch :E

Did you hear the story about a couple of guys that took their brand new range rover onto a frozen lake to go fishing?
The technique is to lob a stick of dynamite some distance from the car in order to blow a hole in the ice through which to fish.
The guys had their dog with them, who had a habit of fetching sticks when thrown and then retreating to the car...............:ugh:

Neville Browning never had a Spaniel. He used to always have Greyhounds and used them for 'coursing'. His main dog was a greyhound called 'Slim'. This was the one he used to take flying with him.

TAKEOFF TUBE Worldwide Aviation Videos - Flying dog! (http://www.takeofftube.com/view/365/flying-dog/)

As an experienced dog owner and pilot I would say its all about the dog's temperament, if unsure try a few fast taxi runs first to gauge the reaction but do not, do not reward the dog for being in a stress situation... this will only reinforce any suspicion of being in a threatening environment, we need to present the experience as quite normal.

One of my previous dogs used to travel with me whenever possible, he started as an 8 week puppy in a cardboard box on the adjacent seat and was always great fun.

My present pedigree mutt is rather "strung" and if I wanted to go flying with her this will require a careful introduction but is not impossible... I now have use of a Piper Arrow and am seriously considering an introduction this spring time.

I believe taking the dog out of the uk is not a problem, the problem is returning! The dog must have have been clear of rabies for at least 6 months which means a rabies treatment 8 months before the return (if treated now, the dog can return to the uk in July-Aug 2010) and must have had a certified tick and tape worm treatment 48 hrs prior to the return (the vets in L2k must be pretty busy).

Hope this helps.

I knew Neville from the King William pub, when I was around 17 and living in Chigwell,he always had a greyhound and took it flying, his other trick was to put a pint of beer in the passenger seat and loop without spilling a drop.
He mostly drank with an airline pilot who I think flew 707's for BOAC.
Quite a character and a gentleman, don't see the combination much today.

my old dog Sooty (a Poodle) ..

One would expect nothing less from a poodle of any sub-persuasion.

My silver Mini has a delightful habit of sitting between the seats, leaning against my shoulder ... and slowly falling asleep.

Often he manages to remain in place .. at other times the body follows the head's lead ... He has, on occasion, even managed to fall off the clipping table when he goes to sleep ... not uncommon at all to find me asleep on the bed and him asleep on/across my tummy .. and, given my particular tummy, that is not altogether an easy task.

mmm .. perhaps the Toys might not be as ideal as a Standard but, I guess, largely a matter of individual temperament and training.

I wouldn't dream of taking his replacement, a Dalmatian

A poodle fancier changing breeds ? ... heresy !!

My 9 month old Yorkie has over 200hrs in her log book. Her predecessor who managed 16 years had around 700.

You may not bring a pet into the UK from a private boat or plane.

Our camping trip to Manitoulin Island this past summer, PIC - pup in charge. We tried muttmuffs for her, but they slipped off. I make a bed in the back of the 180 to get her as far away from the engine noise as possible, and she is ok with that. We make sure every trip has a fun result - camping, or going somewhere that she gets to run around and do doggy fun stuff.

I take my dog with me on long trips. I set the auto pilot then go to sleep, she barks if she sees traffic. Once if it's GA, twice if it's a heavy.

Flew an IMC renewal once, some years ago, with the examiner's two dogs black lab & mongie) in the back.

Also heard a tale of a dog getting a ride in a Hunter to be reunited with his master who was off-unit for some reason!
