bit of trivia here, but anyone know why the 747-400 APU section is not manufactured with flushed rivets whereas the rest of the fuselage is? what'd be the fuel penalty?

the boundry layer of air after travelling the full lenght of the fuselage would be very thick by the time it reaches the APU section, so do not need flush rivets so much. APU section is not pressurised so the metal skin does not need to be thick, and is hard to put counter sunk flush rivets into a thin skin.

Think the same goes for the 767 as well.
