If memory serves me right two years rings a bell since exam sat.
May have changed though.

From LASORS...
http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/175/SECTION%20B.pdf
The RTF written exams and practical test for a stand alone licence are valid for a period of 12 months for licence issue.
Where a candidate completes the examinations for a FRTOL in co-junction with a course for training for a JAR-FCL private pilot's licence, the validity of the radiotelephony examinations may be extended to 24 months from the date of passing the last PPL theoretical examination provided that all examinations are passed within an 18 month period and that application for both licences is made concurrently. PPL holders who subsequently apply for a FTROL will be required to meet the 12 month validity requirements for a stand alone licence.
Hope that helps:}

But, apart from the link not working for me, is the AIC "the authorititive document"?

AICs always have been. You need to register for the link to work! AIS like to know who's popping in!
