Can anyone tell me if an air transport aircraft arriving in the UK needs to carry fuel to divert to a suitable alternate even in CAVOK weather, or can you arrive with a company approved amount of fuel?

Yes- a suitable alternate, and under certain circumstances where destination is below Cat I limits, 2 suitable diversions may be required. These should be practical and suitable alternates as well. With UK weather, it makes sense.

Always must have fuel for an alternate; it's not just a weather related requirement, but also because of a contingency event, such as a blocked runway, airport closure due accident/incident, etc.

According to JAR OPS 1.295, an alternate is not required if:

- WX forcast one hour before untill one hour after arrival: vis 5k & ceiling 2000' (or circling +500')

- max 6h flight time

- destination has two separate runways

Wondering is correct. Under JAROPS the answers are 'no' and 'yes' providing those requirements are met. However.......................

Thanks. What does the max 6hr flight time refer to, A-B time?

'The duration of the planned flight time from take-off to landing'

You can read it all here:

As wondering says you can depart without an alternate using the restrictions he mentions, however you can only do it IF performance considerations mean you can't get alternate fuel on. ie. runway too short or tanks not big enough.

Basic planning is it not? Taxi out-take off-trip - descent - taxi-in + contigency (be it 5%,10% or 15% depends who you are to cover overshoot and hold) + 1st and 2nd alt transit burn. Air carrier FPLs will be rejected without an alt designated.

Thanks for the help there, sorry to be so long getting back. What contingency do you use? We use 2% for 747-400.

SIA used to use 5% or 5 tons, whichever was the lesser amount.

Seen it all go before TOD on a SIN-HKG flight when the planned level was 370 and the achieved level was 270! (thanks Vietnam!).

Never seen that restriction before.
As for air carrier FPLs without an ALT being rejected , again, JAR allows you for instance to designate 27L at heathrow as your alternate when arriving on 27R  so why reject an FPL that has Dest LHR alt LHR.

PS should add there is an AIC about the insanity of trying to rock up to LHR with stuff all fuel....feel free to wade through the user friendly ais site (http://www.ais.org.uk/aes/login.jsp) to find it
