BBC: US 'plans huge Saudi arms deal' (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6920458.stm)

The United States is reported to be preparing a major arms deal with Saudi Arabia worth $20bn (£9.8bn) over the next decade.
It is said to be part of a strategy for countering Iran's growing strength.

Defence officials quoted by US media and the AFP news agency said it would include missile guidance systems, upgraded fighter jets and naval ships. To counter objections from Israel, they said, the Jewish state would be offered significantly increased military aid.

But the New York Times says Bush administration officials are concerned that the size of the package and broader concerns about Saudi Arabia's influence in Iraq could prompt critics in Congress to oppose the package.

Defence Secretary Robert Gates is said to be planning to discuss the proposals in a visit to Saudi Arabia next week with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

The officials said discussions with Congress on the arms package had just begun, and that no announcements were expected during the visit. Other US allies in the region - Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates - could receive equipment and weaponry as part of the deal, the officials said.

Between this, the French (http://www.defense-aerospace.com/cgi-bin/client/modele.pl?prod=71654&session=dae.21979467.1153752213.RMTclcOa9dUAAE0ACuQ&modele=feature) and the UK with Typhoon the Saudis really are in a major arms race vs the Iranians. One hopes it doesn't all come unstuck down the line. or even more so should I say, with their proxy war in Iraq (http://www.military.com/opinion/ :ouch:0,15202,134839,00.html).

Is this the reason the septics want to investigate BAES and the Al Yamamah dealings.

Mr Brown should insist on an investigation into the septics dealings.... But I bet he won't.

In the 1980's when the Sea Harrier deal to India was going, I was in close contact with the French Matra team - they were supplying the Magic 550 missile, as the U.S. wouldn't allow the Sidewinder.

When my French chum turned up looking rather sunburnt, I asked where he'd been - " Oh, Libya "...

And just why did the French refuse permission for the USAF to fly F-111s over France to attack the Libyans in 1986?

To protect their arms deals?

Hmm, now, just remind me. In the past, did the West ever help build up a Middle East country to counter the percieved threat from Iraq?:hmm::uhoh:

Answers why there's all the investigation going on into BAES out in the States then...

... Trust we will return the favour then and look into the US dealings...

A very long and detailed look into those insisting on the investigation into BAE and their associates would be a good hit for starters...

A couple of thoughts on this:

Is this the reason the septics want to investigate BAES and the Al Yamamah dealings.

Answers why there's all the investigation going on into BAES out in the States then...

So the UK government does an investigation on BAeS and you don't comment? And then that investigation is stopped by the PM and you don't comment? Hmmm, pot to kettle......

And then there's this:

Answers why there's all the investigation going on into BAES out in the States then...

If it's a US-based subsidiary and subject to US laws and there is reason to suspect laws being broken, why shouldn't it be investigated?

Regarding this:

Trust we will return the favour then and look into the US dealings

If it's a US subsidiary in the UK and subject to UK law and there is a reason to suspect something illegal, by all means investigate away.

I'm shocked that arms deals are being made. Shocked, I tell you.....
