View Full Version : Change to STAR for YMML R34 arrival?

Excuse the terminology etc ... I'm neither ATC nor an IFR pilot.

The last couple of weeks it appears from the ground as though a STAR for R34 has changed. What looks like aircraft intercepting the ILS for YMEN are doing so far further out - turning over Wonga Park -. I can't imagine this is for spacing since it looks to be happening at quiet times too (like 7:00AEST).

Has a STAR changed or am I just imagining things?

BD,

The short answer is the STAR has not changed recently. I assume you are talking about large jets (and not light acft inbound to EN :-)). Sometimes acft are vectored for spacing (adds a couple of track miles) in this area and 0700 is actually the start of our morning gaggle so it could be that. A contributing factor is that MAESTRO (flow system) has a little trouble in high wind conditions. We sometimes find a whole gaggle may run that all acft from a certain direction (ie NE) need to be stretched.
Hope that makes sense,

Blue

What sort of daily movements is YMML doing now?
P.S. Bring back Rex. Bit of wind never bothered him. :}

Hey bekolblockage,

From Wikipedia:
There were 180,500 aircraft movements, the vast majority (151,200) being domestic passenger services. Melbourne Airport is currently the second busiest airport in Australia after Kingsford Smith Airport (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingsford_Smith_Airport) in Sydney (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney) however is expected to be overtaken by Brisbane Airport (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brisbane_Airport) in the future in terms of annual passenger numbers.[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources)] The airport is curfew (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curfew)-free and operates 24 hours a day, although in practice there are few aircraft movements between midnight and 4 a.m, except freight aircraft.

Of course this doesn't include EN/MB/AV acft.

Rex can return anytime :-)

Enjoy!

Then again, I guess MAESTRO doen't tell you to "go f:mad:k your hat" occasionally! :D
Really miss that.

Thanks Bluerider,

Yes, I did mostly mean large jets - don't get many EN lighties for R34 - also a few QLink Dash-8s too, though mostly them big things.

Am I correct in saying that the wiki entry isn't exactly accurate? Isn't Jandakot the Australian airport with the most aircraft movements at around 450k pa - though obviously Sydney has the largest pax numbers.

Hi BD,

Melbourne Airport is currently the second busiest airport in Australia after Kingsford Smith Airport (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingsford_Smith_Airport) in Sydney (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney) however is expected to be overtaken by Brisbane Airport (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brisbane_Airport) in the future in terms of annual passenger numbers.

Airfield movements not really my speciality but Wiki seems to be refering to annual pax numbers. I do know that the ML SY route is 3rd busiest in the world (also pax numbers).
