There are some schools at Gerald Ford International, and at smaller airfields not far away. I can't help with any recommendations because I flew with an owner-pilot while there on a business trip but putting 'Grand Rapids flight schools' in Google should produce a selection.

The local flying area isn't particularly exciting, but I highly recommend a flight around Lake Michigan to Chicago.

Meigs Field on the waterfront is now (very sadly) closed, but I assume you should still be able to get a view of the Chicago skyline from the air - stunning!

You'll soon run out of things to see in Grand Rapids, but Chicago is a very easy drive if you have a free day.

BTW, despite the name, there don't seem to be any rapids, grand or otherwise.

BTW, if you need a hotel recommendation, I can recommend the Amway Grand Plaza.

Very pleasant, and good location.
