I've been searching endlessly (almost) and I have not yet found my answer. I have let my Canadian Medical and thus my Canadian ATPL lapse for just over 2 years. Anybody in the know as to what I must do to get my ATPL back? I realize that I will need the canadian medical. I am currently overseas flying a widebody under as DGCAM license. Next week I am going to put a call in to transport canada to see if I can get some answers there.... but if memory serves me correctly I will probably have to make about a hundred calls to get to the right person/department. I am thinking that what I will end up having to do is to take my training and flying records with me to TC with fresh medical in hand and see what they have to say... that is when I get back to canada.

If you've let your instrument rating lapse for more than two years you'll need to write the INRAT exam again. Unless. ...... If your other license is recognized by ICAO, you will get an exemption from the exam if you can prove you've done an instrument ride for your foreign license within the past twelve months. For proof of this I think they want a copy of the examiner's marksheet from your last ride. If you can provide that they'll exempt you from the exam, but you'll still have to do a Group 1 Instrument ride when you come home.

I came back to Canada from the UK and this is what I did. I just asked the training department at my old airline for a copy of the paperwork from my last instrument ride. They were happy to oblige. Hope this helps and good luck.

I believe Spenda has it spot on.
I was in Hong Kong for 4 years, kept my Can. medical up to date, however, my last "ride" at the "old" Company was greater than a year from my "ride" at my new company. To make a long story longer, my IFR was deemed to have lapsed, had to re write the INRAT.

Thanks for the replies guys. That was pretty much what I was thinking, just wanted to be sure. I'll be on the horn to TC to find out if our local authority is recognized or not. I'm not too excited to get all rigged up to write the INRAT again. The ATPL exams wouldn't be affected, would they? I sure hope not... took some serious prep to get through those.

From TC; if you look closely if you are able to get a job which requires a type endorsement then the IFR ride can be combined with the endorsement.

Thank you for your query on how to renew your Canadian Group 1 Instrument Rating.
As you know, your Canadian Airline Transport Licence-Aeroplane Category is kept valid by maintaining a Canadian Category 1 Medical Certificate and by maintaining a Group 1 Instrument Rating.
You will need to:
Renew your category 1 Canadian medical if you let it expire in Apr 01, 2007
MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Your Category 1 Medical is kept valid by completing an Aviation Medical Examination with a designated Canadian Aviation Medical Examiner (CAME) prior to the expiry date of your current Category 1 Medical Certificate. Get your IFR renewed as described below
INSTRUMENT RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS:
Canadian Aviation Regulation (CAR) 421.49 "Renewal of Instrument Rating" details the ways an instrument rating may be renewed in Canada. The link to CAR 421.49 is... http://www.tc.gc.ca/CivilAviation/Regserv/Affairs/cars/Part4/Standards/421.htm#421_49
The only way for you to renew your Canadian Instrument rating is to undergo the skill test as described in CAR 421.49(1). At this time there are no provisions in our regulations that will allow us to accept a Foreign Flight test for the renewal of a Canadian Instrument Rating.
Also, because your Group 1 has lapsed for more than 24 months (expired on Oct 01, 2004)...You will have to re-write the INRAT exam. However in your circumstance, CAR 421.49(6) allows for a holder of a Canadian Commercial Pilot Licence or higher whose instrument rating is expired more than 24 months to renew their Canadian Instrument Rating without having to rewrite the IFR written examination (INRAT) provided the applicant can show proof that you meet the requirements of CAR 421.49(6)(a)(b)(c). See above mentioned internet link to CAR 421.49
Provided you meet the above requirements you will not have to rewrite the Instrument Rating written examination.
So I suggest the following:
When choosing to do your type rating training, ensure that you can do a PPC in accordance with the requirements in CAR 421.46 at the same time.
Submit your PPC/IFC flight test report to Transport Canada so they can update your group 1. You will also have to supply the proof required in 421.49(6) along with your flight test report to prevent delays in processing your licence update.
Submit your Type rating application.
