Depending on how you measure it, airline safety is 1,000 times better now than in 1930, 50 to 100 times better than in 1950, 20 times better than in 1960 and so on.
But what has caused these improvements? How much is due to improvements in aircraft design, performance, reliability, aviation infrastructure, nav/coms etc and how much to specific, dedicated safety inituatives? How much 'safety' has come about serendipitously as a by product of developments driven by good old commercial reasons.
Apart from GPS/EGPS what else has significantly improved safety without any significant commercial spin off?
What do people think? What are your nominations for the top five causes of safety and your top five safety requirements without significant direct commercial spin offs?
