TAP A319 aircraft was made "hostage" as the flight diverted to Porto Santo
(PXO) due to a combination of bad weather and the fact the both the VOR
(notam) and the NDB where U/S.

The TAP 1695 departed LIS at 22:45L on the 13 June.

PXO is a small place with limited hotel capacity, and made even worst due to
the fact that the remaining vacancies where already taken by flights also
diverted there.

The decision to return to LIS was made, as the conditions at FNC remained
the same and the crew was going out of duty time, but the 128 PAX refuse to
take the seats for departure. They wanted to go to FNC...

Local police was called up but to no avail.

The flight finally landed at FNC at 12:30L the next day, flown by a fresh
crew.

Think about it the next time you have to divert!

A perennial problem at FNC but why can't they put them on the boat?

I was diverted to PXO the dya before and then back to PXO the next day. The PXO tower controller explained to us what was happening with the TAP Airbus. If the weather is not fit-what can you do? The boat the day before was on a late schedule, and the boat on the day was cancelled due to a holiday that seemed to involve everyone from FNC turning up at PXO.

Take the boat from PXO to FNC???? Ha Ha - have you ever tried it?

It's a real white knuckle ride across a very rough 27 NM.

The ride across in the Aerocondor shed is bad enough at times - 150kts, 2000'!!!

those of you that have actually been to fnc, just think for a moment. if the wind is blowing ???/28 kts gusting 40, as it was when i diverted some time ago - just think what effect that has on the sea swell. i can just imaginge the smell of puke thinking about it. still good thought in princuple.

the sooner airlines stop flying to FNC the better. Every year there are diverts and some quite long stops, pax only get pissed off (and pissed) cos the don't understand all this wx *****. it needs fully explaining to them, and remember if the are IT pax, they prob don't have reps in these other resorts....try to get to them so they think you care.
