If you were to live within a 60-90 minute drive of the airport and to spend 800k max on a home, where would it be? The place should have a rural feel but this can be accomplished by having a largish lot, it doesn't necessarily need to be countryside.

Would it be best to have all-wheel drive on one's car to increase safety during the winter commute to the airport?

Any thoughts welcome. Don't know anything at all about the area.

You have lots of possibilities. If you want to be on water you could look at Lake Simcoe. The west side has excellent multi-lane highways running north and south to YYZ.
If you'd prefer something away from water, you could look around Orangeville and Shelburne, where there are lots of rural properties available - many with rivers and streams, especially in the Hockley Valley.
As for all-wheel drive, it's probably not a bad idea but a 2 wheel drive with snow tires should work well.

Caledon: farmland with widely spaced houses, ours, 4200sq ft on 2.5 acres surrounded by trees. 35 minutes to the airport would be well under your budget. 10 minutes from O/ville, 25 from Brampton. We narrowed our search to north of Mayfield (Brampton/Caledon boundary), west of 50, east of 10, south of 89. You'll definately find something to your taste there. W28 on mls.ca
10 minutes more drive and Hockley Valley is very nice. If we'd had more $$$ to spend we'd have probably gone up there but are very happy here.
I have awd but Mrs c doesn't, neither have winter tires. Roads are well plowed and never had an issue in the 4 winters we've been here.

St Catharines.

Get a house on the lake. Queen E is on your doorstep. Be in YYZ in about 45 mins, depending on traffic.

Have a look at the Hamilton Cambridge Kitchener Guelph Elmira Elora Fergus axis. There's lots of charming places along with a number of glider clubs and the Canadian Warplane Heritage, depending on your off-hour interests.

Lake Simcoe isn't bad. Also Lake Couchiching, which is just north of Lake Simcoe.
Georgian Bay, Muskoka Lakes - but getting expensive, Kawartha Lakes, east of Toronto are all possibilities.
