Runway is closed as snag hits Gulf Air jet
A HYDRAULIC failure left a Gulf Air jet stranded on Bahrain International Airports runway, it was confirmed yesterday.
The incident resulted in the diversion of flights to Doha, Qatar and Dammam Saudi Arabia.
Emergency crews turned out to ensure safety and the runway was closed for about 40 minutes, said officials.
Buses had to be sent out to bring in passengers from the jet, but they disembarked normally, said Gulf Air.
Gulf Air confirms that its flight GF972 from Amman, Jordan to Bahrain, operated by Boeing B767 on Thursday, June 21, encountered a technical problem on landing at Bahrain International Airport (1900 hours), said a statement issued by Gulf Air yesterday, in response to GDN inquiries.
As the aircraft prepared to turn from the runway into a taxiway, a hydraulic brake line fractured and the broken metal caused sparks on the runway, which were observed by the Control Tower.
Disembarked
The pilot was requested to stop and emergency services attended immediately.
All passengers and crew were disembarked (by mobile stairs, not by chutes) without incident and bussed to the terminal, while maintenance engineers attended to the damaged component on the spot, as the aircraft could not be moved.
Gulf Air apologises to all air travellers through Bahrain that evening whose arrival or departure was delayed due to the runway closure.
Gulf Air thanks the management and staff of Bahrain International Airport for their prompt and efficient attention.
A Civil Aviation Affairs spokesman confirmed the incident and said that the runway had to be closed for security inspections.
As a standard procedure after such isolated incidents from time to time, it is normal to close the runway for security checks, he said.
The aim of course is to inspect the runway for debris or slicks which may cause damage to other aircraft.
