MK Airlines B747 Tyre Burst at FAJS !

Yesterday as we were to depart , a cargo B747 of MK Airlines while departing Runway 03L had tyre burst and left lot of debris which necessitated runway closure for 45 mins.
Some aircrafts unable to use shorter runway 03R had to turn back to the gates while those able had to taxy slowly giving way to landing traffic as joburg came down to single runway operation.
I do not know the destination of the aircraft but it continued with the flight and not sure of their landing thereafter as it never returned back to FAJS.
Any Information ?

Why would you return for a tyre burst? I have experinced several of those and not once did we return. You have to make a landing with blown tyres anyway, you might as well carry on to destination if there is no evidence of major damage to the aircraft or systems.

Tyre burst can inflict lots of damage, especially occuring at Vr/max tire rotation; Concorde Paris anyone?.


A punctured tank and associated fuel leak, for example, may not become evident until well into the flightplan; the potential fire hazard alone warrants an air turnback. Fan blades that have ingested this type of heavy FOD may not register high vibe levels or unusual sound, but can, and will fail without warning.


Intrepid skipper or no, an oceanic and/or trans Africa flight may quickly run out of options. You will recall the leaking fuel, albeit for a different technical scenario, and the incredibly lucky outcome of the Canadian TransAt glider pilots? Not really the set of dice I'd choose to roll.


No evidence of major damage to the aircraft or systems? How could you possibly know that in any timely manner?

The sour tale of near fatality at the nation's airports has continue unabated, as a South African cargo aircraft with registration number, B-MKL landed on its belly, weekend, at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.
The plane was said to have lost its two tyres, while preparing to land.
Pilot of the aircraft allegedly contacted the control tower, which contacted other relevant agencies to prepare for crash landing.
The aircraft landed at about 6.25p.m. on its belly, damaging a part of the runway 18right of the international wing of the airport, which led to the temporary closure of the runway for repairs.
THISDAY learnt that the incident would have been tragic, but for concerted efforts of fire officers of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria(FAAN), and other agencies within the airport that dutifully and efficiently manned their positions to rescue the aircraft.
Waiting for the aircraft were 80 FAAN firemen, 30 medical doctors and nurses,15 Air force officers and men of the Civil Defence Corps who were at alert to avert any danger.
The distressed plane eventually landed at the cargo terminal of the airport with its 10 crew members. The runway has since been reopened for use after its repair.
Major airlines in Nigeria have scheduled a meeting for today, to deliberate on ways to permanently avert these near fatal incidents and to re-appraise their attitude to safety and aircraft maintenance.»

Two questions:

B-MKL. Is that registered in China ?

Were they using remoulds ?

You will find that due to cost factors the majority of aircraft tyres are remoulds. Unless the tyre suffers from serious wear or another defect they are all generally just re-treaded. I don't think the fact a tyre was a remould or new will make a lot of difference.

FLT MKA808/ JNB-LOS-LUX Flight departed JNB around 1130Z 14/04/2007 A/C 9G-MKL B747-2R7F. A/C burst two tyres on take off from JNB. Flt continued as normal an made a non-edventful landing LOS escorted by fire trucks etc as a precaution(not on its belly as above!) . Tyres changed during turnaround and no visible damage found after inspection. Flight departed LOS safely as MKA747 bound for LUX. Flight encountered no other known problems and no further MX(well MX resulting from said incident) was required....GMKAA
