1) On an approach plate, what does the abbrv ALS stand for (for instance, the straight in approach tables has one DA and RVR for ILS-DME and another for ALS out).

2) Which way would you usually turn when you break off from an approach for a circle to land ?

1) Aerodrome/Airfield Lighting System
2) Unless specified, to suit the handling pilot or any wind/terrain/traffic issues.

A in ALS actually means approach. They extend up to 900m before threshold and come in many different forms like Calvert, SALS, ALSF-II, SFL, REIL... Also they come handy to line-checkers if other conversational themes are exhausted.
