Hi there,
Just a quick question, are Type Rating Instructors and Training Captains required to get a FI(A) Rating? If so, would this have to be done on a SEP?

As far as I am aware. The answer is no, however the theory side of teaching covers the same as the training captain course.
I stand corrected.
However.....if you are contemplating doing the FI course whilst looking for a job in the airlines then do it! It helped me a great deal.
Good luck!

An FI rating is not a pre-requisite for the TRI rating (see JAR-FCL 1.365). Part 1 of the TRI course duplicates, more or less, the 'Teaching and Learning' element of the FI course, while Part 2 is type specific practical training. The generic term Training Captain covers both base trainers, who are TRIs, and line trainers, who do not, necessarily, have any JAA recognised instructional qualification.
