Our airports are secure... Or so we thought. I suppose these things can happen at any time, but in the current security climate it is of even more concern. It just goes to show that the most determined will beat any security measures that may be in force.

From Ananova:

Monday February 11, 01:52 PM. . . .Heathrow raiders escape with millions

Police are hunting a gang of robbers who escaped with millions of dollars during a heist on a security van at Heathrow Airport. . .Scotland Yard refuse to reveal exactly how much money had been taken during the raid at a secure area of the airport.

But it is understood that five million dollars (£3.5 million) flown into Heathrow on a jet from Bahrain and bound for New York's JFK airport was stolen.

The driver of a British Airways security van was stopped by at least two robbers and pulled from the vehicle, thrown to the ground and had his hands bound. They then put the cash into another British Airways van and escaped undetected from the scene.

The second van was later found burnt out in the Feltham area, near Heathrow. There was no trace of the cash or the robbers.

Flying squad officers launched a major investigation following the raid at the strictly controlled airside zone near Terminal 4.

The driver was found on the floor. He was treated at a west London hospital for shock and minor injuries to his wrists.

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: "At this early stage of the inquiry we are trying to establish the exact circumstances of the robbery. No firearms were seen. The suspect vehicle was later found burnt out.

"There was no trace of the cash or the suspects. A substantial amount of cash was taken but we are not prepared to say how much."

No descriptions of the robbers are being released. An appeal for witnesses has been made.

Well, they didn't hijack the airplane or run it into Windsor Castle etc.
