View Full Version : Troublesome types ?

Following a favourable but just about do-able ATC clearance last week, I was recounting to my (much younger) colleague my experience of a familarisation trip to LATCC circa 1987. My most vivid memory is of the sigh with which a BAC 1-11 was received as it transitted between sectors.

There were various comments about its inability to make clearances, speeds, levels etc etc - all in good humour I might add; but a definite sense of having to work to thread a 1-11 through the other traffic !

This got me thinking about the 21st century equivalents; if indeed there are any in this world of largely homogenous performance. I am very well aware that over-performance can cause the converse problem and also of the issues caused by the large russian a/c operations - but are there still troublesome types?

A340's in the climb.

146's - too slow to stream with the bigger jets and too fast to go with the turboprops (depending on who is flying it)

good one flybhoy!

In addition to the others just mentiones........an A321s eems to perform as badly as an A340 when fully loaded.

Nothing worse than a 319 behind a 321 and trying to keep them spaced on Departure.

Some of them being towed, with no flight crew in, too! :E

Good point Gonzo :ok: Sometimes people forget the stuff on the ground can be as troublesome as the stuff in the air...and before any smart-alecs chip in, saying "stop" isn't necessarily the answer

More an approach thing maybe, but the dreaded sheds... climb worse than a cessna when full.

A330 climb rate improves to 300fpm when expediting.

Climb rate of an A330?

I thought it was due to the curvature of the Earth.

Try an IL76 that just manages to scrape up to 2500, maybe even a whole 3000 feet about 25 miles from the departure runway, while the radar processor can't quite decide whether an up-arrow or down-arrow is appropriate.... Then he decides to accelerate and the down-arrow is right. Such a joy.

What about Tupolev Tu-154s?

I hear they scream into the flight levels at lightning pace.

That's the pax screaming when they realise they're on a Tupolev

Good old Tu-154.
The best airliner, IMHO, (for ATC) ever. Great ROC (from GND to FL390 within 80-90NM); mach No range between .76 - .84 (max I saw was M.89 at FL390, pilot (former Balkan - Bulgarian airlines) claimed they can do it at the sea level as well) and with a friendly pilot in it, never had to use "magic word" (OTHERWISE "are you able... OTHERWISE...") on them.

Fascinating stuff.

And interesting comments about the A321 as well; seems like they might have similar issues getting out of the sky too - we were effectively vectored to 'undertake' one that was having some issues making the clearances into BRS the other week.

The f/o reckoned he could see 'uncharitable' hand gestures (am fairly certain he was joking) from the other flightdeck a couple of thousand feet above.

Cessna C500, 525, 550.

We call them high level speed bumps. I once had to slow a PA31 on approach to follow one. :ooh:

146's are a right pain in the neck. You never know how theyre going to perform....some actually do not too badly (in a relative sense :) ) while others are just plain crap. Asked one southbound out of Brum, just out of FL90, to expedite out of FL110 and the pilot replied that his present rate of climb (about 1100fpm) was the best he could give :ugh: :ugh: :ugh: :ugh:. Conversely, also had some inbound 146's that have chewed all over the back end of some 737's in front of them
E145's are the same. What a fantastically crap preforming aircraft :D :D :D, well certainly in the lower levels anyway.
