View Full Version : Sanction against Pilot?

Yesterday afternoon at Heathrow a light twinjet decided to trundle back along the runway after landing, causing the following BA 747 to go-around with the consequent delays and extra work for ATC.
Would the pilot have been interviewed about this? Is there any way s/he can be made to apologise/make amends/behave more responsibly next time?

A go around would require some paperwork to be filled out as a minimum, and the ATC manager would have to be made aware as it would likely qualify as a "reportable incident" as far as NATS is concerned. Any pilot would probably be aware if they saw a 747 going over them on a go around that they had made a mistake and hopefully, being a responsible person, would be the first to make contact after the incident. The most important part is to learn from it rather than taking any firmer action...

In this case the bizjet pilot was still on the Tower frequency so he would have heard the ATC instruction to the 747 to go-around. He also had a few words from ATC and I'm sure the 747 pilot would have liked to contribute some if he'd not been otherwise occupied. I just wondered what would happen later.

Yesterday afternoon at Heathrow a light twinjet decided to trundle back along the runway after landingThe bizjet didn't quite trundle 'back' along the runway, implying that it turned and backtracked. It merely missed a turning off the runway which most of us in the tower thought it could have made safely. It was by no means unexpected, as we were all laying bets on whether the 747 was going to have to go around in the few minutes beforehand! A very high proportion of our go arounds are caused by bizjets being slow to vacate.

The go around is logged in our database, along with the reason. It would go no further than being a statistic, unless the ATCO wanted to file a report on it.
