the current news talk report, that 6 people didn't survive the crash but they are still looking for survivors.

A Supa Puma from HELOG came from construction work in Kaprun and was about to approach Zell am See airport where a Katana just took off when the collision happend.

ZELL AM SEE 05.03.2007

Several dead by GA-collision.

Probably six people are killed on Monday morning at the Schmittenhohe (ski area) near Zell am See in Austria in a collision between a helicopter and a small aeroplane. The cause of the accident is still un-clear.

It happened over the Areitbahn (a ski-lift) They collided over the Areitbahn and both crashed according to accident investigator Franz Michi.

One of the wrecks is burning, probably six people are killed in the accident, according to County Rescue Commander Gerhard Huber. Rescue parties are still looking for possible survivors.

The swiss Super Puma ( HELOG ) apparently left a water powerplant construction site in the mountains near Kaprun inbound the airfield of Zell am See and collided with a small S/E Airplane Katana, which just has departed this airfield inbound Linz. Obviously the pilot of the Katana and all aboard the Super Puma were killed in that crash.

I used to teach skiing on that very slope where the accident happened. There was always a lot of helicopter traffic in that area, especially around the Schmittenhohe, the main mountain at Zell am See. Also a lot of GA, especially gliders.

Some ski tourists filmed the crash and reported that the plane climbed after take off and flew right into the helicopter ... the chopper pilot reported even visual contact with the plane after he was informed that a small plane just took of the airport where the helicopter wanted to cross the airspace on the way to Germany.
5 Swiss, 1 French and 1 German were killed in the helicopter and one Austrian who flew the Katana on the way to Lienz.

Could have been a lot worse. The report said there were around 8000 skiers in the area. Most of them would probably have been near the top of the Schmittenhohe where there's a hotel and a number of restaurants.

From the wreckage pics on the Austria news site looks like D-HLOG one of their two 332C1 machines the other one was with UN in Dafar. I worked with Helog in 2000,01,02 and this would have been their permenant staff on the flight helper end of things at this time of year. Has anyone seen sight of a list of the fatalities yet?

One big part of the Puma-Wreck crashed on a skiing slope while on fire.
Big luck, that no skier on the ground was involved.

One of the links says, that the Puma was enroute to Lofer after picking up the passengers at the "Gletscherbahen" station.
The helo pilot anounced the transition of the airspace on the radio and had the airplane in site when contacted by Zell/See airport.
It would have been worst if this happened over the town, very dense construction/population...

It seems Austria gets a lot of these freak accidents, just like the cable-car accident in 2005, where a concrete bucket hits EXACTLY on the cable....., from over 1000' ....

Condolences to all families...
