Probably aquestion i should know the answer to but why is it my radio only goes to 135.975 and frequencies on some of my charts are 136.something.

Am i required to have a different radio or is there something im missing?

Thanks guys.:)

Years (ten?) ago now wasn't the airband increased from 135.975 to 137.975?

Are you sure you haven't got something smeared on the dial?

Standard radio fit for IFR aircraft WAS 760 channel - but that's now increased if you fly above FL195 with the addition of 8.33khz spacing

What you have is a 720 channel radio - still perfectly acceptable for VFR but you'll come a cropper if you want to fly IFR in some places.

to 137.975

to 136.975 ;)

Chilli - I think the increase from 720 to 760 channels occurred when the band went to 136.975; they are 25kHz channels.

136.000 and above mainly for Data and Ops freqs however a few ATIS live there including London City (136.350), Gatwick (136.525) and Leed's (136.200) as well as a few ATC centre freqs.

Thought that's what I said - obviously didn't explain it properly. 8.33 (for the original posters benefit) being IN ADDITION to the above

And Bristol Approach's IFR inbound frequency on 136.075 - that's caught a few people out ;)

ok. well its in a helicopter so after five thousand feet i get a nose bleed!:}

but it has and is being operated under ifr. Is this not acceptable?

couldnt get birmingham atis today, london was good enough to give me the weather but its not atis!

Is this a european thing as the two aircraft which are over 15 years old are recent imports from FAA land and still on the N register.

Thanks for the replies so far. . .

Probably a good idea to have a read of UK AIP GEN 1.5.3

ANY aircraft, operated within CAS is required to have 760 channel comms (para 1.2.1)

In addition, if you're operating IFR in CAS below FL245 then you also need VOR, DME, ADF and an ILS (if required) that is FM immune (I'm guessing if the radios are still 720ch then you aint going to have FM immunity either!)

I'd suggest investing in a couple of Garmin GNS430's fairly sharpish ;)
