Having lived in the south of Cambridge city for 35 years, I have noticed a significant increase in con trails roughly NE-SW and passing a few miles south.
Can any Pilot/ATCO suggest what the overflying traffic is and why these routes seem to have appeared in the last few months?

Probably caused by aircraft passing roughly NE-SW and a few miles south ...........:ok:
Hope that helps.

Could it not be something to do with the extension of controlled airspace north of Cambridge?

Hi windy 1.
What you are probably seeing are the jets from Scandinavia routing through UK airspace to spain etc. The route is high level and goes almost directly overhead LHR from the north of Denmark. It has become more popular because there are less delays on it than going via Germany and France.:)

Don't worry. Contrails are comprised of ice crystals and reflect more incoming short wave radiation than they bounce back long wave radiation, so in spite of what you read, they probably have no adverse effect on the Earth's climate.
