Advice on Health Insurance

I am about to start flying with an international operator (mainly Africa) who provide medical insurance for accident but not general illness. This must be obtained by me personally, and I have to provide proof of purchase of a health insurance, as part of my contract.

Does anybody know how common this is amongst operators, and of any decent covers available?
