Base Training

[Five Livers]

Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department insist on applicants for an initial HKG licence undergoing base training in the aircraft - regardless of the standard of the simulator used for the conversion training. In other words, zero fllight time conversions are only allowed for subsequent changes of type.
Do any other authorities take this stance?

PS: I'm talking about 744s,777s, A340s etc - not lighties

Singapore does not allow Zero Flight Time conversions. That applies to ALL conversions, whether they be initial issue licence, or an existing licence holder converting to a new aircraft.

Japan too. Visit Shimojishima (west of Naha) some time and watch the heavies bounce the days away. It makes you wonder why your training was done in a level D sim, and how many $$ Japanese carriers waste. Does HK require a carrier to fly a new type for a month without pax to "prove" they can operate it safely?

I never did really understand what the hell we are doing giving experienced pilots a couple of circuits in any aeroplane these days. Apart from the huge cost, we'd be far better employed doing a session of landings in a good ZFT sim where we can control the weather conditions and the guy might actually learn something useful. Comments refer to someone who's already rated on similar equipment - jet to jet or t-p to t-p - not to someone who has never flown a medium/large aircraft. That's what sims are for. Learn the basic technique there. You'll make enough mistakes on the line!
