Folks,

currently trying to decide between getting a Garmin 196 or a Lowrance Airmap 1000. Which is better

Current "best" new prices new in UK I've found are:

Gasrmin 196 = £419.99
Lowrance Airmap 1000 = £389.99

Which ot these two would you choose? :hmm:

The 196. I have owned both, but sold the 1000 to get the 196 due to the addition of approach procedures (at least from the FAF in the US), and the obstruction database. If you fly mainly VFR then the 1000 might be a better bet, IMHO, due to the larger display and use of standard memory technology.

I have the Airmap 1000 (bought it in the US before it became available here) and love it - apart from the lack of approach procedures!

Great screen, though the unit overall is a bit porky. You can, of course, use the 'pseudo-HSI' display to 'check' your progress on an NDB approach - set the final approach course in the OBS, using the NDB as the active waypoint, and you get effectively a VOR approach for free. Quite scary how much it disagrees with the ADF needle, though, at times.

Very happy with the 196 and you can pick up a good second hand unit for £340 ish.

I did a side by side comparison of the two and opted for the Lowrance due to the vastly superior screen. It does lack MATZ in the database though, which the Garmin has.

The colour 2000 has since dropped in price and if I was buying now I would go for that.
