Looking at some of the latest displays available I have seen some mods with a 3D display of terrain on the PFD.

Using a terrain database it portrays a virtual scene of surrounding terrain with the conventional symbology overlaid.

Great piece of kit and wonder if Boeing is planning on installing it.

Stilton,
It's now called "Synthetic Vision" and by the time the 787 enters service it will be pretty common on everything from puddlejumpers to bizjets. The big problem is that originally the avionics vendors made it so realistic there was a real danger the pilot wouldn't look outside at all! Latest versions have been dumbed down following FAA's wishes with more artificial-looking scenery & contours.
