View Full Version : RAIM Prediction confusion

I refer to the RAIM prediction below as generated by Airservices Australia via their NAIPS site. It is for YMMB (Moorabbin) and issued 21/11/06 at 0734UTC.
I find this output quite confusing and I have contacted the ASA Briefing Office in Brisbane and the ASA Head Office in Melbourne...but they are struggling to interpret their own output. But in all fairness to ASA the data is probably coming from a concrete lined bunker 300 feet under the Nevada desert.
Some of the questions I would like clarified include:
1. The prediction indicates that there are no RAIM outages for TSO-C129 equipment.....but over what period into the future. Does a GPS RAIM prediction cover a 6 hour period, a 24 hour period, a 48 hour period, or what.
2. The TSO-C146 prediction is even more bewildering because on the one hand it states that there are NO GPS RAIM FD OUTAGES FOR NPA...then it goes on to list a series of time exclusions...and finally it concludes with GPS RAIM FDE UNAVBL FOR NPA.
This is the actual output. Can anybody make sense of it.

FD = Fault Detection (RX tells you something is wrong)
FDE = Fault Detection & Exclusion (RX tells you something is wrong, and sorts out which satellite is in error and excludes it from the navigation solution)

More satellites in view are required for FDE (if your receiver has that facility), therefore there is more likelihood that this is not available.

AFAIK the predictions can be up to 72 hrs in advance, but accuracy falls off after about 24 hrs....

Hope this helps
