Hi, trying to find a report on the near CFIT that happened a year or two ago at Coventry airport. I believe it was an Air Algerie 737 doing a VOR approach that got to 700 feet or so of the city, but could be wrong. Google just throws up the crash in 1994 when I type in key words.

Cheers

I'm unaware of any air algerie aircraft having visited Coventry since the 737 accident which was considerably more than than two years ago appart from one that brought the investigation team in the immediate aftermarth of the accident. Suspect there is confusion here with the actual accident

Thanks, I think confusion over carrier then, but there was definitely an incident in recent years. Aircraft descended very low on an NPA and was ordered to go-around..

Are you sure your not getting confused with the jet which did something remarkably similar at BHX next door?

It was doing the 15 NDB. There was some debate as to which DME they were using ILS or HON

They did a dive and drive down to MDA from miles out.

This was an Iranian airbus, believe it was on approach to 33 at Bhx and got very low over the disused Honiley Airfield.
The only incident I can recall at Cvt involved an An26 on an Ils approach to 23 that was ordered to go round as a 737 hadn't cleared the runway and was somewhat slow in carrying out the instruction

......and that one (BHX) extensively covered (as usual) by PPRune (http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?t=212537&highlight=mahan)

See Air Algerie 21 Dec 1994 (http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=19941221-0&lang=en) and the AAIB report. (www.aaib.gov.uk/publications/formal_reports/boeing_502519.cfm) Also see here. (www.aaib.gov.uk/cms_resources/dft_avsafety_pdf_500796.pdf)

For information there are several near CFIT incidents in the paper ‘TAWS Saves’ (http://uk.geocities.com/[email protected]/alf5071h.htm). Although no locations were given, I do not believe that any were in the UK.

It was not at Coventry but over Honiley airfield,a Iranian airliner (Mahan A-310) which came down very low over a farm mistook the old airfield for BHX then put on full power to get out of trouble, the only other incident at Coventry was a British United A.T.L Carvair which overshot and ploughed up the grass at Baginton, then a F.27 did the same thing finishing up in the wire boundary fence.
The tragic Air Algerie crash is well documented, one of the Phoenix Air Cargo
leased aircraft returning in bad weather to Coventry, during a power cut crashed
into some woods at Binley,a sad sequence of events.
Info from a local (to Coventry ) source who has always proved reliable in the past.
Hope it helps

There was a recent incident at Manchester of a TP (ATR I think) descending to approx 400' agl whilst still several miles out on the ILS.
Report available on AAIB website.
