How to get a Canadian ATPL?

Hi guys, I need a little help and some advice here. I am seeking for some flying opportunities in Canada. I would like to know how to obtain a Canadian ATP (I know the immigration part)? Currently I am holding a FAA ATP, with just under 3000 hr, flying a CRJ for a regional airline in USA. Thanks!

All the rules change Dec 1 in theory you will only have to write an air regs exam will see how it pans out. I'am looking for a U.S. ATPL :ok:

I am currently in the process of doing the same....go to the Transport Canada website and search personnel licensing. Following that you will be able to find an application form for the conversion which you will then take in with the fee and wait the required time for the verification process from the FAA, mind you the class 1 medical willbe required.....of course all this is effective Dec 1st

hi all,

i have a similar query- i hold an aussie CPL-IR & am recent resident of canada- for the conversion would i just need the air reg exam too?
or as i heard from few that you need to sit all the theory exams again and do a CPL-IR test as well?
if so, would anyone know what would be a rough cost of all this?

My understanding is that this is a Bi-lateral agreement between Canada/USA only.

Therefore unless you hold an FAA license, you would have to write the Cdn IFR (INRAT) and either the ATP or Commercial exams, then complete a Multi/Engined flight test.

You can find out by calling Transport Canada in whatever region you reside. As for the cost it would be minimal for the written exams, you will need some dual instruction from a school and when they feel your competent they would recommend you for the flight test.

Today is the first day in which the tests are available from Transport Canada. I called the local office today, and so far no one has taken the test. The test consists of 20 questions taken from the ATPL study guide on the Transport Canada website.

If anyone has taken the test would you please let us know what was on it and how to study for it?

I'll tell you something, the Canadian ATP exam has nothing to do with the FAA. There are no multiple questions study guides as for the FAA written. You have to go through all the books and memorize them really good in order to present your examination. Here a link to where you can find something...

the applicant shows a valid foreign license from a contracting state of the International Civil Aviation Organization (IACO)
evidence of the date of the last medical examination

...sure...and this will be valid ONLY for PRIVATE use, ie all the privileges of your licence, Multi, IFR, etc..without the right to use it as a Commercial pilot...:ugh:

Had FAA and JAA ATP before coming to Canada.
Had to sit 5 written tests:
2 very easy: Radio Telephony and PSTAR (Canadian regs):zzz:
3 not that easy: SARON, SAMRA (ATPs), IR:(

Had to take 2 flight tests:
ME (since less than 50hrs MEwithin the last 6 months)
IR on ME.

It looks as things have changed with the new TC/FAA deal:confused:

I called TC about it on December 1st as well, and at that time it was confirmed. It also includes type ratings aquired in either country.

You can convert EVERYTHING... with the exception of instructor ratings.
