A question for LTMA controllers:

By my understanding of what is stated in AIC 49/2005 "Mode S transition arrangements", from 1st April 2007, all aircraft entering the London TMA must be as a minimum Elementary Mode S compliant, i.e. non-Mode S equiped not allowed.

A couple of questions:

a) Will non-Mode S equiped aircraft be turned away?
b) What about military aircraft (most being non-mode S) operating out of Northolt
c) Do any of you know about this? :uhoh:

I think you will find there is an extension on this deadline

Hadn't heard that, can you supply a source? The CAA RIA for the rollout of Elementary Mode S is ongoing, but the LTMA carriage I though was mandatory from April 07 as the 2 year transition comes to an end.

Anyway, even if it is extended, I'd still be interested in knowing the answers to my questions for when the time comes :)

Regarding B, my experience is that most mil aircraft operating out of Northolt do have mode S already, save for a couple of Royal Navy/Army twin prop types.
