It has been announced in the local media today that Nottingham (Tollerton) Airfield has been put on the market by owners Nottingham City Council. It has been stated that twenty bidders are interested in the site which is up for sale with an estimated value of £5 million with the Council putting in clawback provisions if housing was allowed on the site. The Borough Council, Rushcliffe, will need to find space for 13,000 homes in this area.
It was stated in the Nottingham Evening Post that the current airfield operators, Truman Aviation, have a 30 year lease which expires in 2013 and the newspaper said they are interested in buying. If developed for housing the site is estimated to be worth £100 million.
The sale will be by closed bids by the end of October with contracts to be exchanged on November 1st!!!!.
A very sad and worrying day.

I voted "no" to the question "do you think that the airport should be redeveloped?" Seems like at present 71.5% DON'T want redevelopment!

The proposed Rushcliffe local plan goes up to 2021 and only makes provision for 3000 new houses and they reckon they can fit them in without having to develop any airfields. So Rushcliffe doesn't actually want it. Given the opposition at council level it would be a very speculative purchase. There again, from experience Rushcliffe planning make it up as they go along, and who knows what might happen if the right amount of money changes hands.......

It would be a shame to lose it, especially as it would be replaced by a horde of soul-less houses.

Unless I'm mistaken; the local plan has been scrapped by the Tories because it was a way of circumventing Lib Dem opposition to another housing Cash Bonanza at Sharphill wood in the area. Don't rely on the local plan - or the Tories!

Discussed on another thread:-

Tollerton - Good News! (http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?t=253836&highlight=tollerton)

The future of this fantastic GA airfield has been secured!

Well, a lot has happened since Sept 2006 when this thread was last active. The local plan hasn't been scrapped, but it is no longer considered 'statutory' as they are waiting for further instructions from higher authorities. These could include a requirement to build far more houses in Rushcliffe, which wouldn't surprise me one bit.

The problem with places like Wymeswold, which was mentioned, is the roads around there aren't up to carrying the additional traffic. Tollerton is very close to a reasonably decent road network, as road networks go. Same could be said for Newton, but not quite as good. One now suspects that buying Tollerton was a very shrewd investment, could turn out to be worth an absolute fortune, time will tell I suppose.
