Any one know if the German gentleman got out ok, we were in the approach phase so had to stop listening on 121.5 (1226Z)
He sounded remarkably calm

Thats good, I think it could have been,9mls from the coast near a ship, if you have to do it it was a good time and place!:hmm:

Have seen it posted elsewhere that not only is he fine, but a BD and then a BA helped by circling over his location while the SAR helicopter was on its way.

Sounds like good work by all.

We pulled him out the sea and he was fine, if a little shocked. Nice work by the BA A321, which orbited above us and helped id the area. Bizarrely, an old mate of mine was in the FO's seat.

I've heard it was a fuel problem that meant the aircraft had to ditch.

Would be interested to hear if it was a tech issue which meant there was not enough fuel to continue normal flight, or if it was operational error in judging fuel required/payload/weather.

Lucky he put down so near the coast as the Beeb is reporting he didn't seem dressed for a swim.

Was the a/c reasonably intact when it was found, and was it afloat?

What kind of search or holding pattern do you fly in such a situation?
I remember that flying a stable pattern visually around a fixed point like a house with a small plane can be difficult, how do you do it with a jet and a moving object at sea?

I guess the f/o (ex-SAR if he is an old mate of sarmonkey?) knew some tricks

Yeh, like inputting a hold into the MCDU and pressing Command A :)
