Hi All,

As you know RAF Valley is a very high action airfield with lots of fast jet training. I have been listening to the ATIS broadcasts and some of it is a mystery.

Can anyone enlighten me please :ugh:

Weather/Cloud

(1) Blue - simple enough, cloud high
(2) Green - ???
(3) Amber rated Students only - ????
(4) Red - ????
(5) White rated Students only - ????
(6) Any other wx ratings that i haven't heard

Thanks

Steve :bored:

Not quite sure how accurate that is, hopefully one of our Mil Colleagues can attest to its accuracy.

The Navy split one of the codes (amber I think) into two.

Certainly the British part of NATO (RAF at least) had Yellow 1 and 2

Just beware that the references to Amber Rated Studes or White Rated Studes does not have any direct relevance to the colour state.

The studes work their way up through various instrument ratings according to their skill and number of flying hours. An 'Amber' rating means that they have to add 500ft to the IAM and a 'white' rating, 200ft. It is only with the award of a Green rating that the inst app can be flown down to the promulgated minimum. There used to be a Master Green and that bestowed no extra priviledges but merely denoted that the holder was very good at IF.

When Valley promulgates a restriction like 'White Rated Students', it may be with reference to the cloud base, vis or wind/crosswind and so not necessarily directly associated with the colour state.

Green or worse = no solo student flying.
