Our bosses realised that, in order to retain the few remaining ATC's, they have to pay us. They now looking at an allowance. We would like to know what type of allowances are paid to our fellow ATC's so we could propose the same. Manyyyyy thanks

Hi there,

Good luck with the allowances.
A few that have been around in the Uk for some years to think about.
Be aware that some have been amalgamated into pay deals though.
Home to duty allowance, meteorological observers allowance, weekend working (in various forms), Training allowances (OJTI mentioned in other threads), shift allowance.
why not just go for the pay rise in general ???
Good luck:)

What is the average wage in your country?
That would be a good starting point for negotiation.
Are you or any of your colleagues in a union, are there any unions at all?
What exactly do you do? How much traffic is there?
Good luck.

Hi Voel,
I second the question (recomendation) re unions. if you can affiliate with IFATCA, that would be a logical place to start this line of question. Or even if not: someone in IFATCA may be able to advise you accordingly.
Have to disagree a little bit with just going for the wage rise ie no allowances, but it depends on tax exemptions. Some of the allowances we get are non-taxable.
A reasoned argument, that is reasonable, has to be presented. Eg, if you have to drive to work some distance, or at times when public transport isn't available or safe, a transport allowance based on distance is a reasonable ask.
If you have to work on a holiday/at night/on a recall, some type of extra payment is reasonable, unless everyone in your country accepts working at normal rates in these situations.
What sort of conditions do similarly qualified professionals have?
If your shift is extended, a meal allowance might be reasonable.
Included in our contract are such items as sick leave, shift worker leave, long service leave, maternity leave, overtime allowance and transport allowance. Most of these sorts of things have had to be negotiated for long and hard by past (and present) union representative.
It sounds a little like you might currently be in a position of some strength (?) and if so, what conditions are laid down now could be very important as a foundation for the future. This is where IFATCA advise would be worthwhile. Good luck.

Thanks guys for your advice. The big problem is that we are still with Government. For that reason, they cannot give us a salary grade, which is not unique to that structure. They however can top up the salary by introducing an additional allowance. The union already negotiated a station allowance and an instructors allowance. Govt does not want to introduce a professional allowance, as we are already on a professional salary. Is there such thing as a rating allowance or proficiency allowance in your part of the world?

Isolated Establishment Allowance (ie no public transport available to your work facility, you must drive your own car, so it's a type of car allowance)

Complexity Allowances such as:
Sim Ops Allowance (introduced in Oz for crossing runways ops)

Loss of Licence Allowance (insurance for losing your licence on medical grounds, thence your job)

Let's not forget shift work penalties... most government scales operate on a mon-fri and 8-6 routine, working outside those hours should attract penalities. in Oz we had 1.5x for Saturday and 2x for Sundays, 2.5x for public holidays. We also had a loading factor for shifts starting before 8am or finishing after 7pm.
