Hi all, I currently undergoing the selection process for ATCO with Airservices Australia. I made it through the testing day a couple of months ago, and have a panel interview coming up shortly. I've been given very little indication of how many more stages there are to the process, what is involved in the training course and when it is likely to start etc... apart from the information i have been able to scavenge from the ASA website and from these forums. is there anyone who has been through the process recently who is able to give me an insight into what lies ahead? Is the interview the final stage or is there more to go?
also anyone who has interviewed with ASA who has any tips, they would be much appreciated

If the system is still the same as it was 15 years ago, then you will have to go through approxmiately 2 years of theory combined with simulator exercises. The course is very cut-throat becaue it is such a specialist field. They do not allow for many mistakes (obviously) as in the real world mistakes carry potentially a lifetime penalty. You must be good (and quick) at maths - in order to identify conflict issues. Just think of a 3-dimensional picture and it all comes together (easy to say).

However, I hope for your sake that you are given the chance and that you come out of the other oend a competent and confident ATCO.

Your other option (if you haven't considered) is the forces. They are screaming out for ATC's at the moment. Lots of movement in their stocks I believe.:)

Training course for enroute is 11 months, then final field training for anywhere up to six months depending on the amount of theory and sim you do before training live.

Best of luck with the interviews. My only tip is give specific examples in response to the questions asked - they want to know what you did and how you reacted.

Cheers,

NFR.

great, thanks for the help guys.

topdrop, couldn't get onto the civilair site, something wrong with my browser maybe, but i'll check it out for sure.
lickmine, i also applied for the forces, as pilot and ATC. passed all the tests, but i have one lazy eye, which is no good for them apparently, although has posed no problem in me getting class 1 medical from CASA...
may give it another shot soon, depending on whether the new relaxed medical standards apply to me at all.

Benny,
Spoke with Civilair office and their server has some problems. They said it should be fixed in a day or two.
