Hello one and all,any help would be appreciated on this. I hold a JAA ATPL with associated FI ratings along with MEP and SPA IR and MPA IR. Everything is valid apart from the single crew ir/mep, which would simply need an LPC to become valid. My question is this:

How do i convert to FAA licences? I don't wish to work in the USA,but i would like to have an equivalent FAA licence so i can hire etc

My understanding is that to get an FAA ATP i would have to do 1)Written test 2)training as required to get to test standard and 3) Oral and Flight test. But what about the instructors rating?

Any help or advice would greatly recieved!!

HiJon

I went to the USA 10 years ago with a UK CPL/IR and FI rating - to convert I had to do ALL the tests! I think you're right about what you (as an ICAO ATPL holder) will need to do to get an FAA ATPL. Based on my experience, you will get no credit for your FI rating - if you want an FAA one you will have to do written test (not very difficult), training to test standard, and flight test (quite demanding, esp the oral).

Hope that helps some - bear in mind my knowledge is out of date

Bob,

If I understand you correctly, to convert JAA ME CPL and IR to FAA equivalents, you are required to undertake both FAA written and practical examinations but no flight training.

As a separate issue, how does one add a JAA issued private MEP to a standalone FAA PPL (training and tests competed in USA and not issued on back of foreign licence)?

From memory - your first point is, strictly, correct. But a FI has to sign you off for the tests, so some training/assessment flying is inevitable.

I think the same applies to your second point.

Sorry if your too late but you can't add any ratings based on foreign ratings to a full FAA PPL you need to do all the tests.
The only way round this is to surrender your FAA PPL then get a FAA PPL based on your foreign licence.
