View Full Version : British JSF - Has it got an IFR probe?

Has anyone seen a photo of the British version of the JSF (or Dave) with an IFR probe? The Yanks will want a receptical for a boom for theirs and there doesn't seem much room to fit a probe up front for the RAF / RN aircraft.

It'll probably end up with a bodged on one like the mud-moving Tonka.

The USN and USMC use probe and drogue, so the F-35B and C have an extraordinarily compact retractable probe installation.

Both carrier & jump Daves have retractable prods

I saw the JSF at Yeovilton today and there wasn't a fixed IFR probe.

If it has a dinky little probe I hope it is large and long enough to accept the larger centre line drogue, assuming that the larger drogue is still around when the JSF gets here. There is a history to this in that the Scimitar had this problem many years ago.

It carries a refueling probe fitted into the right side of the forward fuselage, rather than the U.S. Air Force standard refueling receptacle normally located on the top surface of the aircraft.

Quote from the link at Post #7:
'...a missionized external gun is an option.'

Missionized. Anyone care to venture a definition?

Missionized = we'll buy bullets for this one.

Missionized = The B and C have an optional external pod, unlike the A's internal gun. It fits on a dedicated centreline pylon, so it shouldn't waggle around as much as the old SUU-23....

Same gun as on the Typhoon, which means the same ammo. So if we buy the ammo and maintenance kit for the JSF, that means....... :E

27mm Gun Pod (http://www.defense-aerospace.com/cgi-bin/client/modele.pl?prod=5822&session=dae.21720003.1152431235.RLC0g8Oa9dUAAHQuhAQ&modele=jdc_1)

I thought RAF did not fit guns on its Typhoons, only missiles.

That is incorrect. The RAF typhoons have the fully working gun fitted to the airframe. When they decided that they weren't going to employ the gun opetationally they tried filling the gun space with concrete but this shot the flight characteristics to pieces. So... kept the gun where it is so as not to screw up their new jet and just decided to not purchse bullets and support kit. Hope its worth the 17 pence it is probably saving them :ugh:

If the Typhoon is ever used in anger I forsee a UOR being issued double quick time.

If a Typhoon got into a gunfight, hasn't it failed already????. Best to light the coals and get out of Dodge!

Ahh but the tranche 3 a/c are going to be air to ground capable apparently and 27mm rounds are cheaper than bombs and rockets.

If the F22 has got a gun (and a bigger one than ours) why can't we have one?

So what will that do to the aircrafts' stealth characteristics? Doesn't that defeat the object of a lot of expense?

Not clear that an op requiring high degrees of LO would involve blasting away with a popgun at PB ranges. Anyhow, will Gordo be pursuaded to actually buy any pods given they're not needed for Harrier.

PS does anybody really believe that bull**** about concrete guns? Were they more successful making blue circle bullets? Were pilots were required for the same reason?
