License help please

Hello all,

Newbie here, but fantastic site – have been reading through. Anyhow, I need your help please!

I learned to fly in 1998 at 43 Air School in South Africa. I passed my PPL in 44 hours and came back to the UK where I did 5 hours instrument flying in preparation for my UK conversion – my last hours were logged in summer ’99.

Unfortunately, I never did get round to converting the license and a dramatic change in lifestyle meant flying wasn’t really going to happen for me.

I went to NZ for New Year 6 months ago and spent a couple of weeks flying with my mate in his Rallye. Needless to say the bug bit and I got right back into it, becoming pretty proficient in my aircraft handling again over 2 weeks.

Now my life is much more settled and I am looking at getting my license sorted, upgrading a bit (Night rating, then onto IR) and getting a plane – probably a Rallye!

Please can you give me a guide as to what I will need to do to get current in the UK?

This is the bible on UK licensing and will definitely answer your question.

From memory, you will need to complete sufficient training to complete the JAR PPL skills test and possibly take a couple of exams, though I seem to remember something about your TT too (less than 100 hours TT made a difference...)

Looks pretty straightforward - get the exams under the belt again (still got all the books), train "at the discretion of the Head of Training" (bit vague?!) and pass the PPL Skill test.

The hours still count, which is the important part I guess.

As you have a SA PPL get that current and use it in the UK. I am sure there is someone who can do the necessary Certificate of Test, then all you need is a medical validated by SA.

But am I then not restricted to ZS registered planes?
