Hi

Recently had a request from aircrew to use a particular runway for performance reasons, as the a/c was under-rated (is that how it's spelt?)

I guess this is related to engine performance, anybody care to elaborate?

Cheers

I think the term you are looking for is 'derated', and it is indeed related to engine performance. this thread (http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?t=222816) is one of several in Tech Log discussing it - stick "derate" into the forum search to get the full set. It's quite a popular topic for discussion.

The short explanation is that derating is an engine operated at less than its design capabilities for reasons of economy.

'Underrated' would imply that the aircraft had a bit of a self-esteem problem ;)

Thanks Mad (Flt) Scientist, I did a search using my incorrect term and got no joy, the thread on the Tech Log forum tells me everything I need to know. Although If I did start a thread about which a/c were overrated or underrated I Think there would be quite a response!:)
