I was reading a VFR chart for Rochester and it states that a standard overhead join is preferred.

If so, this leaves very little room for error with regards to remaining outside of CAS. EGTO is 436ft AMSL and lies beneath the London TMA with a base at 2500ft AMSL.

When transiting below the LTMA, I like to have a minimum of 100ft separation. With only 64ft to play with, you'd have to fly very accurately which could be tricky on a bumpy day?

Your thoughts?

It would be madness to fly with 32ft margin, above and below. Why would you not just fly around it?

Join at circuit height (1000 ft QFE). As long as you make your intentions clear, and circuit traffic permits, you can join crosswind, downwind, base or even straight in.

I was referring to the text in the Botlang AM

A standard overhead join is preferred but other joins may be requested.

A "standard" overhead join will require you to fly over the landing end of the runway at 2000ft AAL. Unless I've missed something, this will put you only 64ft below the LTMA.

So - adapt it. Fly it at 2400ft QNH or 1900ft QFE. Standard altimeter accuracy is 75ft anyway, so you can expect to be different to other people joining by that much.

This is the facts but if you prefer a 100 ft margin or slightly more I dont think in reality anyone at Rochester will get to stressed.
