When is atlas going to start hiring mainline again? Or is everything slowly going oversea?

Spoke with some Atlas folks today here at JFK and they related that 12 of their planes are now parked. No other details.

Good luck to the working folks at Atlas. Having parked twelve planes or so, did the company's Marketing Dept lose that much business, or could it be to punish themselves (using pilots as targets), having lost the famous court battle?

Rumor has it,

Second half of the year, all A/C are flying heavy. So, keep your eyes out for the contract to be settled and then major hiring.

If it's true that all A/C are flying, then we're really understaffed. Great time to get in.

Atlas Air becomes a minority investor in new UK cargo airline

Atlas Air Inc has become a minority investor in a new UK-based cargo airline known as Global Supply Systems Limited. (5/3/2001)


The new cargo carrier has been set up in conjunction with entrepreneur John Porter. The company will initially provide aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance leases of Boeing 747 freighter aircraft to airlines in the UK and will begin operations out of London's Stanstead Airport.

John Porter is the 51 per cent shareholder of Global with New York-based Atlas Air having the remaining 49 per cent interest. Mr Porter will provide the venture with start-up equity, with UK experience and business acumen, Atlas Air also contributing start-up equity and operating and commercial expertise.

According to Richard Shuyler, chief executive officer of Atlas Air, he claimed: "We are delighted to have a businessman of John Porter's calibre taking both an ownership interest and an active role in this initiative, Atlas Air has a history of anticipating market trends, and we believe that the demand for low cost heavy air freight capacity in the UK will continue to grow.

He added, "With this investment, we are positioning ourselves to capitalise on that growth, while adapting to the changing regulatory environment in the UK."

Looks like Mr. Porter is probably only adding his name and skill as equity (no money). Sounds just like the Fedex Feeder Group airlines vs the Mainline Fedex airline. I think we really know Atlas will be providing all the money and assets. This is legal in the states, but is it legal in the UK, especially when you add in the fact of operational control by a 51% EU owner. Side note: Does anyone know if John Porter has been envolved with a James Martin of the Telos Group????

I imagine that when Atlas says jump, John Porter will already be up there ten feet high. Does the UK CAA endorse the hands off approach to operational control? To add to this I have seen an Atlas publication saying that it will provide scheduling, dispatch, and maintenance coordination for hire to GSS(like Porter will say no). Does not sound any different than Atlas Air Crew Services except the crews can say that they are not set up as union busters of the Atlas Mainline pilots since they will be operating with a UK AOC.
