Hi All,

Could anyone tell me what the maximum Rate of Descent is when cleared to leave the Hold. I think it is a minimum of 750ft/min and a max of 1000ft/min?
Could anyone confirm or correct this please.

Many thanks,

The minimum RoD is normally 500 fpm, however ATC prefer you to vacate the level as quickly as possible so they can bring the stack down. Personally, I use 1000 fpm.

Human Factor,

Many thanks for taking the time to answer my query.

I totally agree. ATC expect a minimum descent (or climb) rate of 500 fpm. Although a descent rate of more than 1000 fpm is possible it is not a good idea for more than 1000 fpm in this climate could be a company SOP safety call.

Therefore, 750 fpm (if needed) would be a good result.

If there are others below you in the stack, anything more than 1500 FPM may trigger a TCAS RA. So, 750-1000 FPM is probably a good range.

750 fpm +/- 150fpm (ie 600-900)

Source or rationale?

There is no maximum ROD rule when leaving a hold. If you are leaving a hold, then traffic in the hold should not be a TCAS concern.

Who mentioned TCAS?

I did. So did FlapsOne.

it wasn't in the question: still searching for my rationale, it will come.
